LA06: Design Audit - Quick Reference Booklet

With this particular activity we had to audit 3 different magazine publications and then develop a hand-sized (A5) booklet about what the good and bad design elements were.

I modified this slightly so it could be a quick reference point in general when designing a publication, not just a magazine.

Following is a copy of the booklet:

Annual Plan

Here is an example of just one of the many things which form part of my position at Kingborough Council.  I designed the front cover for their current Annual Plan (2013/14) and reformatted the document.

Here's a link to their website should you wish to view the complete document: Kingborough Council's 2013/14 Annual Plan

QP11: Invoice Book

For this project we had to create a triplicate invoice book using one colour only and had to research what other details needed to be on an invoice, etc.  We also needed to request quote from 3 different printers to see what other elements we had to bear in mind when designing this invoice book.

The printers that I had been in contact all said to allow a spine for when the books are glued together as well as for the perforation of the pages.  So I added to this to the size of the document so the invoice is still A4 in size.

QP12: Photo Story

For this activity we had to take 1-2 photos that tell a story.

Here are mine - what do you think happened here? Or can you come up with a line.... I can think of several for these two!

QP10: Restaurant Menu

For this project we had to create a restaurant menu for Emilio's.  They requested that the menu sizing be A4 and the style should reflect the logo and previous researched projects for Emilio's restaurant.

I chose this particular style as it ties in nicely with previous designs and can quite easy be photocopied in black and white should it need be without loosing too much of the original resolution of the imagery.

I think a plain white A4 paper stock is best as it is generally what most companies have and can easily get no matter where they go for their supplies.  Most papers now are carbon neutral in any case.

It would be more cost effective to photocopied than getting professionally printed.  Although having said that initially having the pages professionally printed would be a better quality, especially should the clients which to change their menus to colour.  I think this menu would be best in a hard-bound booklet with clear plastic pockets so the pages can be easily replaced should a menu item change, more items be added or pricing increase without loosing the professionalism of the actual menu itself.

LA05: Advertisement

For this activity we had to create an advertisement and its aim to reach a targeted audience as a way to persuade the reader to buy a particular product.

We had to create both a newspaper advertisement and an A4 (folded to DL) flyer for unaddressed mail-out of 10,000 copies via Australia Post.

We had to promote a new model 4WD vehicle with a target market aimed at small to medium sized families.  We could only use one colour only - that being black and had to have our own imagery and use of a typeface that we wouldn't normally use.  I used Impact for the main body and 'announcement' of the product, used Arial Bold for the Hobart dealer information (as it needed to be clear and easily read should the person want to buy the product) and decided a different font to be used for the price as a way of catching the eye, this font was Buttons the Bear.

QP09: Restaurant Signage (Emilio's)

For this quick project the client, in this case Emilio's, now would like designs for some outdoor signage - one for the front of their building and one sandwich board (aka A-Frame).

I kept my designs simple so as not to overcrowd the area as simple tends to be more eye-catching.  I also reversed the black fork to white so it would show up on a black background.  I chose black for the background as it would be more eye-catching and provide depth to the building (considering the building was inbetween other shops and having white brick-work with 2 windows looking out to the street).

QP08 Information Sheet: Rosen Publications

For this project we had to re-produced an information sheet for Rosen Publications.  Size to be A4, with 20mm margins all around.

This is what I came up with, I just couldn't work out how to wrap/round the text box in InDesign - does anyone have any hints for me for next time?

LA01: Photoshop Tennis

For this learning activity we had to partner-up with another student from the same class (in this instance Chris Phelps was kind enough to help me since he did this activity earlier with another student :) ) and 'lob' an image back and forth for up to 6 returns to create the end product.

Here is what we started with:

QP07 Part 2: Emilio's Flier

Also for this activity we had to create a DL flier for Emilio's so they could photocopy on yellow paper so one colour only could be used (black).

Emilio's Flier

QP07: Restaurant Logo - Emilio's

My rationale for developing this particular logo is to me using the Italian flag colours of green, white and red is quite eye-catching and bright as well as ‘fresh’ looking which the clients where after.
I also thought having some sort of utensil would help to signify that it is a restaurant as well as being available for take-aways.  To me it promotes an enjoyable food tasting experience just around the corner.
Also in the brief it advised us to be mindful of future outdoor signage and production of a menu, I believe that this design would be easily used for both of these in the near future.

Typeface Cover Concept & Typeface Category

For this activity we had to create our own font design and I chose the FUN category for my block font.

My typeface design: The Blocks
Also we had to each develop our own front cover concept before agreeing on a final cover so we can then create a combined style guide (visual guide) for type. Here is what I came up with:

LA04: Your Electrical Company

For this activity we had to brainstorm and develop an action plan on how to assist this organisation to begin the corporate rebranding and development of a new logo.

I used the brainstorming site of https://bubbl.us/ to create this flow chart:

I then used my creative checklist that I developed from previous studies in the Certificate III to create an action plan as follows:

QP06 - Handyman Flyer

For this activity we had to create a DL sized (one colour: Black only) flyer for Handyman Services, whilst using no more than 2 different fonts.

The project was to be printed on one side only and could easily be photocopied and to be delivered to Australia Post to residential postboxes.

I came up with the following design, trying to keep it simple yet effective and easy to read.

QP04 - Hair Flier Advertisement

For this quick project I was able to use a work example that I recently done for Kingborough Council's upcoming Youth Expo:

QP05 - Invitation

For this activity we had to create an easy-to-read invitation, DL size using 2 colours only.  I decided Black and White would be best as it always has a classy look about it as well as being bold.

So I decided a two-sided invitation would look nice to set the theme and drew my own tie and dress :-)

Back of the Invitation with actual details
This invitation could be printed on a natural parchment paper/card stock that would look quite effective - I use this for doing work invitations and certificates.  However you would need to be careful if you are wanting to print double-sided I would recommend you have this particular file printed professionally.  Otherwise the black on the front of the invitation would be too much for the paper to absorb and would come through the other side of your 'white' page.

Skyways Newspaper Ad

For this activity we had to create an advert for the local newspaper - noting that the advert is one colour (black) only. I kept the advert very simple, looking at the ad now thinking maybe a different heading font would be more effective if bolded in full white against the black backdrop so that way it doesn't look too fuzzy :-)

QP02 - Savoy Food Importers Advert

For this activity we had to create an advert for a local newspaper, The Examiner based on 3 columns (110mm) x 120mm in mono.

Here is what I came up with:

QP01 - Panda Advertisement

Hi All
For this activity I was able to use a previous advertisement that I did for the Kingborough Council.

I made both a full colour and mono (black and white) version.  The mono version was used in the local community newspaper since it was cheaper.

The full colour advertisement was able to be used through social media sites to promote the event.

D'Entrecasteaux Channel Report 2012 - Front Cover Design

As part of my position with Kingborough Council, I designed the front cover for the newly release State of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and lower Huon Estuary 2012 report.

Simply follow the below link to view the front (and back) cover design.  Please note that the file size is 4.6MB

Logo Creation

For Part A of our final prepress module we had to design a logo that tied in with the Australiana theme without using the typical Australian icons like the Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock and other typical icons.

We had to base our design on the Aussie Battler.  I came up with the idea of an old rickety fence that you see in the farming communities in the outback with overgrown grass.

This is the grey version of my logo
We also had to develop particular stationery using this design, including business cards, letterhead and with compliments slip.

Car Sales Ad

For this learning activity we had to create a car sales advert for a local newspaper which we had to clip paths around the car images.  This way only the car image would show and not the background.

Here is the end product:

Weather Map

I had to recreate a weather map that was supplied for this assignment.

Here is the end product:

T-Shirt Design

For this assignment as part of the symbol design you had to create your own image within a circle and some text for a t-shirt.

Here is what I came up with:

Wanted

For this activity we had create a WANTED advert for another client.

Here is what I came up with using the artwork that was supplied and requested to be used by that said client.
